Autofill fields in Business Central with Copilot

Posted on April 25, 2025

When you create a new record or edit an existing record, Copilot can suggest values for some of the editable fields on the page.
Autofill is available for fields (but not rows or columns) in card and document pages such as customers, sales orders, items, or even your own custom pages.

Suggestions are based on your company data and can be based on recently used values, commonly used values, or an intelligent selection from a range of values in a lookup or option field. They can also be AI-generated, depending on the field and context.

Copilot simply suggests the value, giving you the opportunity to review where the suggestion came from. Ultimately, users remain in control and decide whether to apply, discard, or replace the value.

Available later this wave: Copilot will automatically search the Web for more information and make suggestions for customer or supplier contact information, product codes, and similar fields that typically contain public information.

Without further ado – let’s try it out:

We create a new customer and let autofill suggest some values

After only a few seconds we get those suggestions:

Let’s keep that. The suggestion sounds fine, but tbh, “suitable” or “common” may be the right choice, but not for sure. Anyway, we move on.

This was interesting. If City and ZIP Code are available in the database, autofill will field the correct value and suggest it. That’s nice. Also the language code referring to the address is suggested correctly

Let’s have a look at the Posting Groups suggested:

This is ok for me, but the other two suggestions are just random guesses imho:

What also can happen is, that copilot does not have a suggestion:

Which is totally fine, before fabricating – just stop 🙂

Of course on other records this function is also available – for e.g. Sales Order

Conclusion

In its current state, it is a “nice to have” feature. The suggestions on the customer card, for example, are fine, but you definitely need to have a look at them before keeping them.

When Web Search is added later, this feature may become more interesting for finding addresses, websites, etc. to complete your data in Business Central.

What you definitely should not do is use this feature on existing setup data. This makes absolutely no sense in my opinion.
