Since we are still waiting for the official MCP release for Business Central, I was wondering what we can do without it for now.
Our “low code/no code” tool of choice will be Copilot Studio. We will create our first agent and give him a simple instruction.

We could share some knowledge with him.

However, since I don’t want to use Dataverse, there’s nothing here for us. Instead, we provide our agent with some tools.

Looks familiar? Yeah, it’s pretty much the same connectors that we know from the Power Platform when using Power Automate, for example.
Let’s create a tool that can find sales quotes in Business Central.

That’s pretty much it. Name and describe it, then set up your environment and company in “Inputs.” Then, add the API category and select your desired table.
Currently, I always use “Custom Value” and not “Dynamically fill with AI” since the latter does not produce the best results. Maybe it will work better for me in the future.
Now we are ready to test this little friend.

Is it that simple? Yes! Is it a “real” agent in terms of AI? I would say partially. Of course, it’s not as “smart” as an MCP, which we hope to see officially from MS soon, but it gets the job done.
Since we are using the “standard” API, we can extend it and incorporate our own data or actions via API.
Here are some more examples of what can easily be done at the moment without any coding:

Give it a try! Even without official MCP support, I think we can already do a lot with Copilot Studio regarding agents. Yes, some of these prompts and results can be done in Business Central with Chat with Copilot, but not all of them. You can use your agent in flows and deploy it in many ways. Those are just some of the benefits.
I will give this a shot and see what can be done without MCP.
