Summarize in Business Central with Copilot

Posted on April 10, 2025

With the current release of Business Central 2025 Wave 1, we get a new Copilot functionality – Summarize with Copilot:

Whether you’re looking at customer details, a large order, or any other record, you might spend a considerable amount of time on understanding the current state of your data and the fields that matter. Microsoft Copilot is the AI-powered assistant that helps spark creativity, boost productivity, and eliminate tedious tasks. Copilot summarizes a record into a couple of brief sentences, greatly reducing the effort needed to get to insights about your data and plan your approach.

Sounds fun – let’s take a closer look. Let’s start with the customer card

Immediately after opening the map, you will find the new “Summary” factbox at the top of the factbox bar. It’s a “non-prompt” Copilot feature, so we just have to click “Start summarizing” without thinking about a proper prompt. Here is the result:

I use the Business Manager role and get some nice insights on this customer in terms of balance due, outstanding invoices, total sales, and so on. We can also click on “Show me more” – which opens the “Chat with Copilot” and gives us even more insights:

Clicking on “dotted” numbers will take you to the exact place in the map where you can find the field, underlined values would open a new page pre-filtered for that value.

Remember I said I was using the Business Manager role above – let’s change the role to Accountant and see the result in a direct comparison:

Accountant Business Manager

Slight changes depending on the role – but nothing too big.

Of course, this feature is also available in other entities:

Vendor

Item

Sales Order

Microsoft’s official description of the feature:

Summarize is a new capability of Copilot in Business Central:

  • A new summary FactBox displays on card and document pages, such as a Customer, Sales Order, Item, and even your custom pages.
  • Get summaries of the record by displaying a few bullet points that are the top things you need to know, with even more insights available on demand.
  • Copilot searches through data from the current page, from FactBoxes, and from related pages and statistics to identify what is urgent and important, so you don’t have to.
  • Summaries are tailored to your role, focusing on what matters to you.
  • Interact with the summary to navigate, explore, and quickly act on your data.
  • Refresh the summary based on the latest data.

I haven’t tested it on a custom page, but I’m curious how this will work.

So why use this and not look for the information in the desired fields on the customer card for example? Time….you simply save some time. Of course, the summarization takes a few seconds, but after that you get a very good insight into the important KPI for this card.

Definitely one of my new favorite Copilot features in Microsoft Business Central. Give it a try!
